This is a list of First Steps activities. For some reason there is no index or table of contents that lists the activities, that can make it very frustrating when you are trying to refer to your texts when planning or running your program. Obviously this is not a comprehensive list, I have just been adding activities as I have used them. Please feel free to expand this index.

First Steps Reading Map of Development

Early Reading Phase

Use of Texts

• Read and Retell - p107
• Buddy Bump Reading - p155
• Facts and Falsehoods - FS RMD p161 - can be done as a semi-independent activity using any non-fiction book

Contextual Understanding

• Four Corners - FS RMD p 170 - four students read the same text and jot their ideas as they read on the corners of a shared piece of paper to discuss later
• Same and Different - FS RMD p173 - compare two characters

Transitional Reading Phase

Contextual Understanding

• Possible Predictions - FS RMD p223 - explore predictions about a book with the class to increase understanding around the different ways readers interpret books based on things like prior knowledge.

Conventions

• Word Cline - FS RMD p234 - sort synonyms of a word into order of intensity, to help build vocabulary. For instance: freezing, cold, chilly, warm, hot, boiling. See the Word Cline page for more examples.
